Why Do Women Get Chin Hair? The Real Reasons (and What You Can Actually Do About It)

Chin hair on women is incredibly common, at every age, and it has nothing to do with how "clean" or well cared for your skin is. It's simply hormones and hair follicles doing what hair follicles do.

Why do women get chin hair in the first place?

Every hair follicle on your body — including your chin — is sensitive to androgens (a group of hormones that includes testosterone, which women produce naturally too, just in smaller amounts than men). When a follicle on the chin or jawline is more sensitive to androgens than the follicles around it, it can produce a thicker, darker hair. This is called a terminal hair, as opposed to the fine, fair "peach fuzz" (vellus hair) that covers most of our face.

It's a completely normal part of how skin and hormones work. Almost every woman has a handful of these more androgen-sensitive follicles somewhere on her face — for many people they're just less noticeable.

Is chin hair a sign of something else?

Usually, no — occasional coarse chin hairs are simply a normal variation, not a symptom of anything. However, if you notice several new hairs appearing quite suddenly, alongside other changes such as irregular periods, acne, or hair thinning on the scalp, it's worth mentioning to your GP. This pattern can occasionally point to a hormonal condition such as PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), where androgen levels run slightly higher. It's not something to self-diagnose from a Google search, but it is worth a conversation if it feels sudden or different for you.

For the vast majority of women, though, chin hair is simply chin hair — not a red flag.

Does chin hair get worse with age?

It can, yes — and this is genuinely one of the most common questions we hear in clinic. As oestrogen naturally declines through perimenopause and menopause, the balance between oestrogen and androgens shifts. Androgens don't necessarily increase, but with less oestrogen to balance them out, their effects — including terminal hair growth on the chin and jawline — can become more noticeable. This is completely normal and affects a huge number of women in their 40s, 50s and beyond.

Is chin hair hereditary?

Genetics plays a role too. How sensitive your hair follicles are to androgens is partly inherited, which is why chin hair can run in families — if your mum or grandmother dealt with it, there's a reasonable chance you might notice it as well. Ethnic background can also influence hair density and distribution across the face.

What can you actually do about it?

Plucking, threading and waxing all work, but they're temporary, can irritate the skin, and for coarse chin hair specifically, plucking can occasionally cause ingrown hairs or, over time, make hair feel like it's regrowing faster (it isn't — but the regrowth is blunt-tipped, so it can feel that way).
